Concrete Requirements for Car Lifts

Concrete Requirements for Car Lifts are one of the most important factors to consider before installing a vehicle lift. Whether you are installing a 2-post lift, 4-post lift, parking lift, or automotive service lift, the concrete foundation must be capable of supporting the weight of both the lift and the vehicle safely. Proper concrete preparation helps ensure long-term performance, safe operation, and maximum lift reliability.

Before purchasing or installing an AMSAN lift, it is essential to verify that your concrete floor meets the minimum thickness, strength, and condition requirements outlined below. Failure to install a lift on a suitable concrete surface may result in unsafe operating conditions and could affect lift performance.

Why Concrete Requirements for Car Lifts Matter

Every automotive lift transfers thousands of pounds of force into the concrete floor through its anchor points. If the concrete is too thin, weak, cracked, or improperly reinforced, the lift may not perform as designed. Meeting the proper concrete requirements for car lifts helps provide a stable foundation for vehicle storage, maintenance, repairs, and everyday operation.

For two-post lifts in particular, the concrete foundation is critical because the entire vehicle load is supported through the lift columns and anchor system. Four-post lifts also benefit from a strong, level concrete floor to ensure proper stability and safe lifting.

HOW THICK SHOULD CONCRETE BE FOR A CAR LIFT?

Amsan lifts must install on a solid concrete surface only. Our lifts have concrete specifications requirements to secure them to a concrete base. Make sure the concrete is thick enough to support the hoist. The concrete slab needs to be a certain depth to safely install the car lift.

If you are installing the lift on the existing concrete floor you should test the floor to verify the minimum floor compressive strength. Check your build drawings to verify proper floor reinforcement. A continuous single slab requires for all two post lifts.

Do not install Amsan lift on hand-mixed concrete.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NEW CONCRETE SLAB

Lift must be installed on a concrete surface a minimum of 12” thick and 4,000 psi tensile strength.

Minimum Aging of New Concrete Slab: 28 Days

Make sure the concrete is in good condition and free of large cracks.

For precise information regarding required edge distances and bolt-to-bolt distances, consult the anchor manufacturer’s specifications.

Do not install Amsan lift on hand-mixed concrete.

Whatever technique you use, keep in mind that the anchor bolts on the Lift should be checked every day.

For your specific lift model please refer to the Concrete Specifications section in the lift manual.

Customer Responsibilities:

Customers are responsible for arranging unloading of freight at the delivery location. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions on the website or contact the Amsan team for additional information.

It is also the customer’s responsibility to ensure the selected lift model and all hoist specifications — including ceiling height, width, length, and overall space requirements — are suitable for their garage or shop before purchase and installation.

For lifts installed by Amsan, customers must ensure the concrete floor meets the requirements outlined in the installation manual. Customers are also responsible for confirming that no electrical, plumbing, heating, or water lines are located beneath the installation area.

If your existing concrete floor does not meet the required specifications, please contact Amsan for alternative solutions and recommendations.
